Jubilee Fund investors help make affordable child care possible for Manitobans.
In 2023, Jubilee Fund provided a $200,000.00 loan guarantee via Assiniboine Credit Union towards Huron Child Care, an expanding daycare in the North End of Winnipeg.
The funding is part of a more than $1.8 million project called Mountain Child Care on Mountain Avenue, and will ensure greater access to affordable child care is available to the area. The new 120 space child care centre being developed by Huron Child Care, will more than double the current 91 spaces that they manage and operate. The families that Huron Child Care supports come from a diverse range of backgrounds including newcomers.
“We know there is demand for childcare in our province as it’s estimated that Manitoba has over 23,000 families on waiting lists,” said Huron program director Erin Nault. “Even within our own centre, we are having to turn away families when their infants age out of care at two-years-old because there’s no space in our existing preschool for 2–5-year-olds.”
Phase 1 of the project will see Huron Child Care acquire a building on Mountain Avenue. Phase 2 will require additional funding to complete the construction into a fully operational childcare centre supporting 52 infants and 68 preschool aged children. The current location supports 36 infants, 40 preschool and 15 school age children.
We’re very excited to be a part of this significant expansion of childcare in Winnipeg’s north end. Affordable child care is a fundamental support required for families without which it becomes difficult to pursue employment, and other necessary family supports. The new centre will also create jobs for the community and reduce the waiting list for childcare.
