Visions of Independence

Vision of Independence Inc. (VOI) is a not-for profit charitable organization, that provides housing and programs to persons with intellectual disabilities. VOI provides residential, day and supported independent living programs in Winnipeg and Portage La Prairie.

In 2000, the Manitoba Government announced the closure of one of Manitoba’s Institutions, Pelican Lake. Under the advisement of the Pelican Lake Transition Team, Adult Family Services, and the Association of Community Living Manitoba; VOI initiated a Winnipeg based community group to form a board of directors. Visions of Independence is committed to ensuring that each of the people they serve has all the rights and opportunities of community living.

Since opening in 2001, the services have expanded and adjusted based on the needs of the community. While many individuals starting using the services shortly after leaving Pelican Lake, others have since become involved  after learning about the services offered by VOI from friends and families.

VOI  received a loan guarantee from the Jubilee Fund to assist with the purchase of a training centre and general office located in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba.
